CAREERS
At St. Colman’s, we believe that high-quality Careers Guidance is essential for inspiring students,
raising aspirations, and equipping them with the tools needed to overcome barriers to success.
Our mission is to prepare students for the next phase of their educational journey, training, or
career by providing the skills, knowledge, and guidance necessary to succeed in an
ever-changing world. We hold high expectations for all our students, including those with special
educational needs and disabilities, ensuring that each individual is empowered to reach their full
potential.
Our careers program is designed to help students develop essential career management skills,
contributing to their personal well-being and enabling them to positively impact their families,
communities, and wider society. We have our own dedicated Careers Officer Mrs Walsh who
works with students, teachers and parents to ensure that choices are well informed and based on
students strengths, interests and aspirations.
Work experience plays a crucial role in helping students connect with the labour market,
understand the skills employers value, and broaden their career awareness. At St. Colman’s, we
ensure that all Year 13 students, regardless of background or ability, have equal access to work
experience opportunities. These placements provide students with valuable practical experience,
help them develop transferable skills, and allow them to gain first-hand insight into various
professional fields, preparing them for their future careers.
Collaborations and Opportunities
We actively collaborate with external partners to enhance our careers provision.
As part of the Ballynahinch Learning Community, we participate in a variety of careers events,
including a beyond-school careers fair. These events connect our students with local employers and
industry professionals, helping them gain a deeper understanding of career pathways available to
them.
In addition, St. Colman’s hosts in-house careers fairs, where students can meet with representatives
from universities, businesses, and apprenticeship providers to explore their future options.
We have also launched UniFrog, a comprehensive platform that supports our students in exploring
university courses, apprenticeships, and other career opportunities. UniFrog provides access to a
wide range of resources, helping students make informed decisions about their next steps. This tool
is widely used across the school to guide students in researching and applying for opportunities that
align with their interests and aspirations.
At St.Colman’s, we are committed to providing a comprehensive, dynamic careers education that
empowers our students to explore, achieve, and succeed in their future careers. Through tailored
guidance, work experience opportunities, and partnerships with local businesses and universities, we
prepare our students to navigate the world of work with confidence and resilience.
